More info

Kiln Dried lumber is wood that has gone through a carefully controlled drying process in which temperature and humidity are controlled in order to remove moisture from the wood. After it has been dried in a kiln it contains a moisture content, on average, of 6% to 12%. This process gets the wood dryer much faster and more consistently than the air dry process.

A key benefit of Kiln Dried lumber is that it is less susceptible to shrinking and expanding because it generally contains similar moisture content as the climate it will be installed in. Some wood workers allow this wood to acclimate to whatever environment it will be used in order to bring moisture levels to an equilibrium (ambience). This process helps to reduce the chances of wood shrinking or expanding.
